Tips for Taking Your Temperature
Digital thermometers are a safe and accurate way to measure your temperature. Below are tips for taking your temperature.
Note that you may get slightly different readings depending on which body part you use to take your temperature.
If your provider has given you other instructions on taking your temperature, please make sure you follow them.
- Before using the thermometer, wash and dry your hands well.
- Follow the instructions that came with your thermometer on how to clean it before and after each use.
- If using an oral (mouth) thermometer, wait at least 15 minutes after eating or drinking. This way your temperature is not affected by the temperature of your food or drink.
- Wait at least 6 hours after taking medications that can lower your temperature. Examples of these medications include acetaminophens like Tylenol®, ibuprofen like Advil® or Motrin®, or aspirin.
- If using an ear thermometer, be aware that ear wax or even the size of your ear canal can affect readings.
