Tips for Blood Glucose Readings
There are different types of health monitoring devices that can measure your blood glucose levels. Below are tips for using a blood glucose meter. You usually need to place a small sample of blood on a test strip with this kind of meter.
If your provider has given you other instructions on taking readings, please make sure you follow them.
- Check the expiration date of your test strips. Make sure you do not use expired test strips. Expired strips can give you inaccurate readings.
- Before taking blood, wash and dry your hands well.
- When taking blood from your finger, use the needle or lancet on the side of your finger. Avoid pricking the middle or tip of your finger. The reason is so you do not develop sore spots on parts of your finger that you use often.
- If you need to get more blood for testing, gently squeeze or massage your hand and finger. Try not to squeeze your fingertip.
- Store your testing supplies in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from very hot or very cold temperatures, moisture, and humidity.
- Follow the instructions that came with your blood glucose meter on how to clean and disinfect it.
